Biography
James Mitchell (1920–2010) was an American actor and dancer. Born in Sacramento, California, he began his career as a dancer and performed with the Agnes de Mille Dance Theatre and American Ballet Theatre. He appeared in leading roles in Broadway musicals including Brigadoon (1947) and Carnival! (1961).
Mitchell's film credits include The Band Wagon (1953), Oklahoma! (1955) and The Turning Point (1977), in which he played Michael. He was best known to television audiences for his long-running role as Palmer Cortlandt on the soap opera All My Children (1979–2010). He also taught movement for actors at institutions including the Juilliard School and Yale University.
