Biography
James Robertson Justice (15 June 1907 – 2 July 1975) was a British character actor. Born James Norval Harald Justice in Lewisham, London, he appeared in British films from the mid-1940s onwards, frequently cast as pompous authority figures.
He is known for his role as Commodore Jensen and the prologue narrator in The Guns of Navarone (1961), and for playing Sir Lancelot Spratt in the Doctor comedy series, beginning with Doctor in the House (1954). Other notable credits include Whisky Galore! (1949), Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951), Moby Dick (1956), Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
He also worked in Scottish public life, helping to launch Scottish Television and serving twice as Rector of the University of Edinburgh.
