Biography
Janet Dale was a British actor whose career spanned theatre and television for five decades. She trained at Bristol University, where she studied German and drama, and began her professional work in the 1970s with productions at the Library Theatre in Scarborough, including several Alan Ayckbourn plays.
Dale appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the award-winning 1982 production of Nicholas Nickleby. She received Olivier award nominations for her performances in The Accrington Pals (1981) and The Merry Wives of Windsor (1986), and played Queen Charlotte in Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III (1991). On television she was credited as Auntie Jean in the 1993 BBC series The Buddha of Suburbia and appeared in series including Midsomer Murders, Father Brown, The Bill and As Time Goes By.
Dale was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and died in 2023.
