Biography
Jean-Benoît Dunckel is a French musician and composer, best known as one half of the electronic music duo Air alongside Nicolas Godin. He has composed original scores for films including The Virgin Suicides (2000), directed by Sofia Coppola, The Summer of Sangailé (2015) and Summer of 85 (2020).
Born in Versailles in 1969, Dunckel studied mathematics and physics and taught at a middle school in Paris before pursuing music professionally. In the 1980s he formed the band Orange with Godin and others. Air was established in 1995; their soundtrack work and albums such as Moon Safari (1998) established their reputation. Dunckel has also released solo albums under his own name and the alias Darkel, and collaborated in projects including Tomorrow's World and Starwalker.
