Biography
Jean-Jacques Annaud is a French film director, screenwriter and producer. Born on 1 October 1943 in Juvisy-sur-Orge, Essonne, he trained at the technical school in Vaugirard and graduated from the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris in 1964. He began his career directing television advertisements in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
His feature debut, Black and White in Color (1976), won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He is known for directing Quest for Fire (1981), which received two César Awards, The Name of the Rose (1986), The Bear (1988), The Lover (1992), Seven Years in Tibet (1997) and Enemy at the Gates (2001), on which he also served as producer and co-wrote the screenplay. Annaud has received five César Awards and other honours including the National Academy of Cinema Award.
