Biography

Jean-Pierre Marielle was a French actor. He trained at the Conservatoire National d'Art Dramatique in Paris, where he became friends with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Rochefort, and graduated with a second prize in comedy in 1954. He began his career in theatre, appearing with the Comédie-Française and later with the Compagnie Grenier-Hussenot, and maintained a parallel stage career throughout his life, winning the Molière Award for Best Actor in 1994.

Marielle appeared in more than a hundred films from the late 1950s to the 2010s. His credits include Let's Rob the Bank (1964), Coup de Torchon (1981), Ménage (1986), All the Mornings of the World (1991), Micmacs (2009) and The Dream Team (2012). He played Jacques Saunière in The Da Vinci Code (2006). He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1992.

Marielle was married to actress Agathe Natanson from 2003 until his death. He died on 24 April 2019 in Saint-Cloud, France.
