Biography
Jeffrey Lane (1954–2026) was an American television writer, producer and Broadway librettist. He began his career as a production assistant on the daytime soap Ryan's Hope before joining its writing staff. He later wrote for Lou Grant and served as a writer and story editor on Cagney & Lacey (1982).
Lane was a writer, executive producer and showrunner on the sitcom Mad About You (1992). His other television credits include The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Bette and the miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan. He also wrote for the Tony Awards broadcasts and several American Film Institute tributes. On Broadway he wrote the book for the musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005), which received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical, and for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
A Wesleyan University graduate, Lane won three Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy and two Peabody Awards.
