Biography
Jeffrey Lewis, also credited as Jeff Lewis, is an American screenwriter and novelist. He worked extensively on the NBC police drama Hill Street Blues (1981–1987) as a writer and producer, contributing to 84 episodes and serving as showrunner for its sixth season and co-showrunner (with David Milch) for the seventh. He received multiple Primetime Emmy nominations and two wins for the series, along with Writers Guild of America recognition.
Lewis trained as a lawyer and served as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan during the 1970s. He later created or co-created series including Bay City Blues (1983) and Beverly Hills Buntz (1987). Since the 2000s he has published several novels, notably the four volumes of The Meritocracy Quartet. He divides his time between Los Angeles and Castine, Maine.
