Biography
Jerry Bock was an American composer best known for his scores for Broadway musicals. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and began writing for television before making his Broadway debut with the score for Mr. Wonderful (1956).
His long collaboration with lyricist Sheldon Harnick produced several successes, including Fiorello! (1959), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Musical, and Fiddler on the Roof (1964), for which they received the Tony Award for Best Composer and Lyricist. The 1971 film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof used his original music and songs. Other notable stage works with Harnick include She Loves Me (1963) and The Rothschilds (1970).
Bock died in Mount Kisco, New York, in 2010.
