Biography
Jimmy Herman (25 October 1940 – 13 September 2013) was an Indigenous Canadian actor of Chipewyan and Dene ancestry, born on the Cold Lake First Nations Reserve in Alberta.
He studied at Grant MacEwan College’s Native Communications Program in Edmonton and worked in media and narration before beginning his acting career with a role in the 1984 CBC pilot John Cat. His breakthrough came in 1990 as Stone Calf in Dances with Wolves.
Herman appeared in numerous films and television series, including an uncredited role in Unforgiven (1992), The X-Files (1993), Grey Owl (1999), Reindeer Games (2000) and a six-year run as Joe Gomba in the CBC series North of 60 (1992–1998). In 2005 he was honoured on the Aboriginal Walk of Fame in Edmonton.
