Biography
Joanne Burke is a film editor and documentary producer and director. She co-edited the Maysles Brothers and Charlotte Zwerin documentary feature Gimme Shelter (1970) and edited three feature films directed by Sidney Lumet, including The Anderson Tapes (1971) and Child's Play (1972). She has also edited more than twenty long-form documentaries for CBS, NBC, PBS and HBO, among them the multiple Emmy-winning Any Place But Here.
Burke taught film editing for five years at New York University and eight years at the School of Visual Arts. Since moving to Paris in 1986 she has produced, written and edited independent films in partnership with her husband, writer and cameraman David Burke. Her directing credits include the documentary Music on My Mind (1990) on jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams and a series of films on women in developing countries.
