Biography
Jocelyn Herbert (22 February 1917 – 6 May 2003) was a British stage designer who also worked as a production designer and costume designer in film. Educated at the Slade School of Art, she began her career in the 1950s with the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre and maintained a long association with the National Theatre.
Her film credits include production design on Lindsay Anderson’s if.... (1968) and O Lucky Man! (1973), Karel Reisz’s Isadora (1968), and Tony Richardson’s The Hotel New Hampshire (1984). She also designed The Whales of August (1987) and contributed to Tom Jones (1963) as colour consultant.
In theatre and opera she designed numerous productions, including works by Samuel Beckett at the Royal Court and operas at Sadler’s Wells, the Paris Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, New York.
