Biography
John Maxwell Brownjohn (11 April 1929 – 6 January 2020) was a British literary translator and screenwriter. He translated more than 160 books from German, French and other languages, winning the Schlegel-Tieck Prize three times and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize once.
Brownjohn collaborated with director Roman Polanski on several screenplays, including Tess (1979), Pirates (1986), Bitter Moon (1992) and The Ninth Gate (1999). He also provided English translation for The Name of the Rose (1986) and dialogue work on The Pianist (2002). He studied classics at Lincoln College, Oxford.
