Biography
John Gregson, born Harold Thomas Gregson, was an English actor of stage, film and television. He appeared in 40 credited film roles between 1948 and 1971, and worked in television from 1960 until his death. He was frequently cast as a police inspector, naval or army officer, or in comedy parts.
After serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, Gregson trained at the Liverpool Old Vic and made his West End debut in 1947. His early film work included supporting roles in Ealing comedies such as Whisky Galore! (1949) and The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), as well as Treasure Island (1950). He achieved leading-man status with Genevieve (1953) and The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953), and later appeared in The Battle of the River Plate (1956), The Longest Day (1962) and The Night of the Generals (1967). On television he starred in the series Gideon's Way (1964–1966). Gregson died in 1975, aged 55.
