Biography
John Heffernan (1934–2018) was an American film, stage and television actor. He began his career in the 1950s as a stage performer in New York, appearing in Broadway productions and winning an Obie Award in 1961. In 1964 he replaced Albert Finney in the title role of the New York production of Luther.
Heffernan made his screen debut in 1960 and is best known for playing Eddie Niles in the 1973 film The Sting. His other film credits include The Fisher King (1991), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), Extreme Measures (1996), Gloria (1999) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999). He also appeared in television series such as The Doctors, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Law & Order, and retired from acting in 2001.
