Biography
John Kitzmiller (4 December 1913 – 23 February 1965) was an American actor who worked primarily in Italy and other parts of Europe. He is best known for playing Quarrel in the James Bond film Dr. No (1962).
Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Kitzmiller studied chemical engineering at the University of Michigan before serving as a captain in the US Army during the Second World War. He remained in Italy after the war and began acting in Italian neorealist films, including Without Pity (1948) and Variety Lights (1950). In 1957 he became the first Black actor to win the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, for his performance in the Yugoslav film Valley of Peace (1956). He appeared in an estimated 40 European films.
Kitzmiller died in Rome of a liver ailment. He had married Dusica Bejic in 1964.
