We value John Masius for the flawed hospital staff of St. Elsewhere, and for writing that takes difficult people seriously. His patience with their shortcomings is welcome; his habit of explaining the lesson after we have understood it is less so.

In the decaying Boston hospital of St. Elsewhere (1982), doing important work does not make the staff easy company. The series John Masius helped create lets their shortcomings persist, rather than tidying them away because their jobs matter. We warmed to these people because the writing did not require them to become agreeable before we could care about them. That gives the actors something substantial to work with, and makes the series worth following through its slower stretches.
St. Elsewhere was created with Mark Tinker, Joshua Brand and John Falsey, who was also among its writers. It would be careless to assign every success or lapse to Masius alone, but the series establishes the strengths and weaknesses that matter in our view of his work. The scripts sometimes keep explaining a moral point after the staff's experiences have made it clear. Some storylines also stretch belief too far for the convincing hospital setting, which makes the exaggeration harder to overlook.
His later career moved between medical dramas, family stories and the afterlife. He created Touched by an Angel (1994) with a darker, more sceptical conception than the version that reached the screen, and departed early over tone. That departure limits how much the finished programme can tell us about his own choices. Providence (1999), another creation, brought family and medical drama together; his writing and showrunning on Dead Like Me (2003) returned to the afterlife. With Hawthorne (2009), he created another medical series.
The actors are the strongest reason to begin with St. Elsewhere. Masius and his fellow writers give them flawed professionals worth getting to know, and the performances repay the time spent in their company. We would happily accept less explanation from the scripts without asking for the people to be any simpler. Try the hospital, with patience for the pace and the occasional lecture.
Biography
John Masius was an American writer and television producer. Born on 30 July 1950 in Manhattan and raised in Scarsdale, New York, he graduated from Scarsdale High School, earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from UCLA. He began his career in the late 1970s as a production assistant on the CBS series The White Shadow, later becoming a writer and coordinating producer.
Masius developed, wrote for and produced the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere (1982–1988) alongside Mark Tinker. He received two Primetime Emmy Awards for writing on the series, along with a Writers Guild of America award and a Humanitas Prize. He was also married to actress Ellen Bry, who appeared in the show, from 1986 until their divorce in 1999; they had three children.
He created the series Touched by an Angel (1994–2003), Providence (1999–2002) and Hawthorne (2009–2011). Other credits include writing and producing work on L.A. Law, Brooklyn Bridge and Dead Like Me. Masius died on 13 September 2025 in Los Angeles from complications of ALS.
