Biography
John Neville was an English actor and theatre director. Born in Willesden, London, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career in the late 1940s. He became known for classical stage roles with the Old Vic Theatre Company in London during the 1950s and later served as artistic director of the Nottingham Playhouse.
Neville moved to Canada with his family in 1972 and took Canadian citizenship. He held artistic directorships at several Canadian theatres, including the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, the Neptune Theatre in Halifax and the Stratford Festival from 1985 to 1989. On screen he appeared as the title character in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), General Staedert in The Fifth Element (1997) and the Well-Manicured Man in the television series The X-Files (1993–2002) and its 1998 film.
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1965 and a Member of the Order of Canada in 2006. Neville died in Toronto on 19 November 2011.
