Biography

John Sparks is a British zoologist and television producer specialising in natural history documentaries. He joined the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol in 1965, initially producing radio programmes before moving to television in 1968. He later served as head of the unit from 1983 to 1988.

Sparks produced four episodes of the landmark series Life on Earth (1979), presented by David Attenborough. The producers of the series, including Sparks, were nominated for a BAFTA Television Award for Best Documentary Series in 1980. His other credits include episodes of Natural World and the series Battle of the Sexes: in the Animal World (1999), as well as co-producing Realms of the Russian Bear with Nigel Marven.
