Biography
Jonathan Tunick (born 19 April 1938) is an American composer, orchestrator and musical director. He studied at Bard College and the Juilliard School.
Tunick is best known for his orchestrations of Stephen Sondheim musicals, beginning with Company in 1970 and continuing until Sondheim’s death in 2021. His film work includes composing the score for The Birdcage (1996) and orchestrating several Mel Brooks films such as Blazing Saddles (1974) and Young Frankenstein (1974). He has also composed for films including Fort Apache, the Bronx (1981), Endless Love (1981) and Find Me Guilty (2006).
Tunick is an EGOT recipient, winning an Academy Award for A Little Night Music (1978), an Emmy for Night of 100 Stars (1982), a Grammy for “No One Is Alone” (1988) and a Tony Award for Titanic (1997). He is married to actress Leigh Beery.
