Biography
Jörn Donner was a Finnish-Swedish writer, film director, producer and politician. Born in Helsinki in 1933, he died there in 2020. He produced Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander (1982), for which he received an Academy Award for best foreign language film, making him the only Finn to win an Oscar to date.
Donner directed numerous films from the 1960s onwards, including A Sunday in September (1963) and Men Can't Be Raped (1978). He headed the Swedish Film Institute from 1978 to 1982 and chaired the Finnish Film Foundation. He also wrote more than thirty books, winning the Finlandia Prize for literature in 1985 for Father and Son, and served as a member of the Finnish parliament and the European Parliament.
