Biography
José María de Cossío was a Spanish costume designer and assistant director. Born in Madrid in 1947, he began working in film in the early 1980s as an assistant director on Pedro Almodóvar’s Dark Habits (1983) and What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984), before moving into costume design with Matador (1986).
He is best known for his long collaboration with Almodóvar, designing costumes for thirteen of the director’s films. These include Law of Desire (1987), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990), High Heels (1991), Kika (1993), Live Flesh (1997) and All About My Mother (1999). He received five Goya Award nominations for his work on Almodóvar films. Cossío was a co-owner of the production company El Deseo in its early years and contributed to more than ninety Spanish feature films. He died in Madrid on 2 March 2023.
