Biography
Joseph Patel (born 1972) is an American producer, director and journalist. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied at the University of California, Davis, contributing to student radio station KDVS. He began his career as a music and culture journalist, later producing and directing content for MTV, Vevo, Vice Media and The Fader.
Patel has a long association with musician Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson. He produced the documentary Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021), directed by Thompson, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature as well as BAFTA, Grammy and Producers Guild awards. He also produced Thompson's Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) (2025).
