Biography
Josephine Whittell, also credited as Josephine Cunningham, was an American character actress. Born in San Francisco, she began her career as a chorus girl and appeared in several Broadway productions in the 1910s and 1920s, including The Only Girl and No, No, Nanette. She made her film debut in the silent era with a featured role in Alimony (1917) and returned to cinema in 1931 after a hiatus.
Whittell appeared in more than 70 films over a career spanning 1916 to 1959. She played Mrs. Dunk in It's a Gift (1934) and had supporting or uncredited roles in films including The Women (1939), Stage Door (1937), The Fountainhead (1949), A Place in the Sun (1951) and A Star Is Born (1954). She was married to actor Robert Warwick.
