Josh Segarra

Josh Segarra is often the cheerful man in a supporting part, apparently uncomplicated and worth paying attention to. He gives that enthusiasm enough warmth to make a joke at his character’s expense feel slightly unfair. We like him best when a comedy lets that good nature survive. As Lance Arroyo in The Other Two (2019–2023), alongside Heléne Yorke, he finds more to play than mere foolishness.

His musical-theatre background helps explain the physical energy of his screen work. The move from children’s television in The Electric Company (2009–2011) to a substantial role in Arrow (2016–2019) took him into sterner material. The subsequent comedy of The Other Two made good use of his warmth, with a character whose apparent simplicity did not have to supply the whole joke.

In Scream VI (2023), the difficulty is how little room there is around the plot’s requirements. Segarra’s neighbour Danny Brackett is placed among the possible suspects alongside Dermot Mulroney’s detective and Liana Liberato’s Quinn, and the film knows we recognise the arrangement. We were frustrated by that guessing game, because the conspicuous positioning of the supporting cast makes it difficult to take an interest in them beyond the question of guilt. Two strong set pieces give the film some force, but the talk between them is tired. It is a limited place to look for what distinguishes Segarra.

Sirens (2025), in which he plays Raymond, is the better evening, though its main attraction is the three leads. Meghann Fahy gives it its chief pleasure, while the sisters’ strained relationship earns the attention that the familiar wealthy eccentrics cannot always hold. The black comedy can lurch between tones; we recommend it with that caveat, not chiefly for Segarra. For a clearer introduction to his comic strengths, start with The Other Two.
