Biography
Judith Thurman is an American writer, biographer and critic. Born in New York City in 1946, she graduated from Brandeis University in 1967. She began her career as a poet and translator before turning to essays and biography.
Her biography Isak Dinesen: The Life of a Storyteller (1982) won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1983 and formed the basis for the 1985 film Out of Africa. Secrets of the Flesh: A Life of Colette (1999) was a finalist for the National Book Award. Thurman has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 2000.
Her 2008 New Yorker article 'First Impressions' about the Chauvet Cave prompted Werner Herzog's documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010), on which she received a screenplay credit and served as co-producer.
