Biography
Julian Mitchell is an English playwright, screenwriter and novelist. Born on 1 May 1935 in Epping, Essex, he was educated at Winchester College and Wadham College, Oxford, where he took a first-class BA in 1958. After national service in the Royal Navy Submarine Service and a Harkness Fellowship in the United States, he became a freelance writer in 1962.
Mitchell is best known for his play Another Country (1981), which won the Olivier Award for Play of the Year, and its 1984 film adaptation. His other screenplays include Arabesque (1966), Vincent & Theo (1990) and Wilde (1997). For television he wrote ten episodes of Inspector Morse (1987–1997) and episodes of Robin Hood (2006). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1985 and received the Somerset Maugham Award in 1964 for his novel The White Father.
