Biography
Julien Bertheau was a French actor. Born in Algiers in 1910, he trained at the Conservatoire national d’art dramatique and studied with Charles Dullin. He made his debut at the Comédie-Française in 1936, became a sociétaire in 1942 and remained with the company until 1958. He also worked with Louis Jouvet and directed productions there.
Bertheau appeared in numerous films, including several by Luis Buñuel: The Milky Way (1969), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) as Monsignor Dufour, The Phantom of Liberty (1974) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). Other notable roles include Napoleon in The Count of Monte Cristo (1954) and Monsieur Lucien in Love on the Run (1979). He died in Nice in 1995. His son Alain Bertheau was also an actor.
