Fi1m perspective

A world champion boxer before she was an actor, Kali Reis stands on screen like someone who expects to be hit and has decided not to mind. In True Detective: Night Country that was enough to hold her own beside Jodie Foster.

Kali Reis does not do much with her face, and she does not need to. She turned professional as a boxer in 2008, won world titles in two weight classes, and did not retire from the ring until 2021, and she carries all of that into a room: the weight settled, the shoulders down, the eyes on whoever is most likely to be trouble. She has said the hard part is "being able to bring the audience in without saying a word." It is the part she is best at.

Her first film was Catch the Fair One (2021), written and directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka from a story she helped write, in which she plays Kaylee, and which drew attention for what it had to say about missing and murdered Indigenous women. The notices praised the performance as raw and physical; some found the story around it more conventional than its subject deserved. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it at length here, but it set the pattern: a woman with a grievance, a body that has been trained, and a script that trusts her to do the work between the lines.

True Detective: Night Country (2024) is where most people met her. Issa López created, wrote and directed it, Jodie Foster plays Liz Danvers, the police chief of an Alaskan town in the long dark of winter, and Reis is Evangeline Navarro, the trooper who will not let an old case rest. Florian Hoffmeister lights them by sodium lamp and snow. We were unsure about the ghosts, and we said so. We were not unsure about Navarro. Foster does most of the talking in their scenes and we kept finding ourselves watching Reis, because she plays a woman who decided the answer years ago and is waiting, with diminishing patience, for the rest of the town to arrive at it. It is the season's steadiest partnership and a large part of why six episodes of procedure and apparitions hold together as well as they do.

Since then the parts have been supporting ones: Nia in Asphalt City (2024) beside Sean Penn, Mila in Rebuilding (2025), Jaq Diallo in Mercy (2026), and Resident Evil (2026). We have not seen enough of them to say how she uses the smaller space. What we can say is that so far she has been cast for the stance: fighters, troopers, women who might have to hit someone before the end. The stance is real and she is good at it. The interesting day will be the one a director gives her a part where nobody throws a punch and nobody carries a badge, and asks her to bring the audience in anyway.
