Biography
Katia Krafft was a French volcanologist and filmmaker. Born Catherine Joséphine Conrad on 17 April 1942 in Guebwiller, she studied physics and chemistry at the University of Strasbourg, where she met Maurice Krafft; the couple married in 1970.
Together they travelled the world documenting volcanic eruptions on film and in photographs, often working at close range. Their archive footage has been used in documentaries including Fire of Love (2022), in which Krafft appears as Self via archive material. She died with her husband on 3 June 1991 during the eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan.
