Katie Jarvis can make embarrassment and defiance visible in the same moment. Her lead performance in Fish Tank is unforced and moving, and gives us good reason to wish more films would make room for her.

When Mia Williams dances in Fish Tank (2009), Katie Jarvis makes the effort matter more than the result. There is awkwardness in it, but also the desire to do something that belongs to her. We were moved by those scenes because Jarvis makes that desire convincing without suggesting that wanting something will be enough. She gives us a teenager we can care about without first making her easier company.
Andrea Arnold's writing and direction keep us close to Mia, including when she is at her least appealing. Jarvis never pauses to request our approval, or makes her difficult behaviour seem harmless. She lets embarrassment remain visible while Mia behaves defiantly, so we are aware of what the girl is trying to conceal. The film marked her debut, but there is nothing tentative about how clearly those conflicting feelings come across.
The encounters with Michael Fassbender's Connor O'Reily show how much Jarvis can do with uncertainty. Adult attention is flattering here before its dangers are understood, and the exchanges stay tense without treating every moment as a warning. The family scenes with Kierston Wareing's Joanne Williams are similarly unsettled, with affection and hostility hard to distinguish. Jarvis does not simplify Mia's responses to make her easier to understand.
Nicolas Chaudeurge's editing gives Jarvis time, particularly valuable in a film whose writing sometimes presses too hard on Mia's troubles. The insistence can grow wearing, and her performance does not make that fault disappear. Phonso Martin is credited for music; the dance scenes use it to let Mia hold our attention without having to provoke anyone. She is no less absorbing when the film stops making her circumstances worse.
Her later work includes Hayley Slater in EastEnders (2018–2019) and Donna in Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins (2021). There are relatively few subsequent screen credits on which to build a broader judgement. We would welcome another lead that gives her comparable time and attention. Start with Fish Tank, allowing for a script that sometimes trusts her less than it should.

Katie Jarvis is an English actress. She made her screen debut as Mia Williams in Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank (2009). She was discovered by a casting agent while arguing with her boyfriend at Tilbury Town railway station and secured the lead role after auditions despite having no prior acting experience.
Jarvis won the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer for her performance in Fish Tank, which received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. She later appeared in the BBC soap opera EastEnders as Hayley Slater (2018–2019) and in Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins (2021) as Donna. Her acting career spanned 2008 to 2021.
