Biography
Kazuko Kurosawa is a Japanese costume designer and essayist. Born in Tokyo on 29 April 1954, she is the daughter of filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and actress Yōko Yaguchi. She studied as a stylist at the Sun Design Institute and the Ito Clothing Research Institute before entering the film industry in 1988 on her father's advice.
She began working on costumes for Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990) and has since designed for numerous films and television productions, including The Twilight Samurai (2002), Zatoichi (2003), Still Walking (2008), Like Father, Like Son (2013), Shoplifters (2018) and Monster (2023). She has also contributed to series such as Shōgun (2024) and the taiga drama Awaiting Kirin (2020).
Kurosawa received the 2008 Genie Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design for Silk (shared with Carlo Poggioli) and the 2019 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for her work on Shoplifters.
