Biography
Kevin Smuts is a South African film score composer specialising in work for feature films, documentaries and commercials. He began his career assisting composer Grant McLachlan on the soundtrack for Faith Like Potatoes, then completed a short apprenticeship with him. McLachlan introduced him to filmmakers Damon and Craig Foster during work on Sharkman, beginning a long collaboration that included assisting Trevor Jones on the score for My Hunter's Heart (2010) at Abbey Road Studios.
Smuts composed the original score for the Netflix documentary My Octopus Teacher (2020), directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed. He has also scored Chasing (2022), Trouble in Lemur Land (2011) and the television series Saving Sirga: Journey into the Heart of a Lion (2017). His score for My Octopus Teacher won the Best Music Score award at the 2021 International Documentary Association Awards.
