Kristin Kreuk has spent twenty years leading long-running television, and her best quality, a stillness that lets other people's feelings show, is one writers have often taken for granted. Smallville used her as a delay; nearly everything since has put her at the front.

For most of seven seasons of Smallville, Kristin Kreuk's Lana Lang stood in a barn and waited for Clark Kent to tell her the truth. He never did, or not when it would have mattered, and the show treated the waiting as tension when it was only a delay. What Kreuk does inside that delay is the interesting part. She listens as if an answer is coming. She lets Tom Welling talk himself into a corner and holds the look a beat longer than the scene needs, so that the silence belongs to her rather than to him. Going back to those early episodes we felt sorrier for her than for Lana: she plays every scene as though the scripts had something to give her, and season after season they did not.
She arrived by open casting call for the Canadian teen series Edgemont in 2001 and went almost straight into Smallville the same year, at eighteen. She stayed in the main cast for seven seasons and came back for a short arc in the eighth, and when she left she said, to Metro in 2008: "I've been doing Smallville since I was 18 so it's been my whole adult life. I love the people and it's a wonderful show to work on but I realised there were things I couldn't do due to the schedule on Smallville." Film had been tried in the meantime, in EuroTrip in 2004 and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009, and neither did her much good; the notices were mixed at best. The lesson she seems to have drawn is that the long form suits her, and she has stuck to it. Four seasons of Beauty & the Beast from 2012. Four of Burden of Truth from 2018, a Canadian legal drama she also produced. Murder in a Small Town from 2024, another small-town mystery, the setting she began in.
The pattern across all of it is the same one we noticed in the barn. She is good opposite a leading man, and the pairing is usually the thing critics mention first, which is both a compliment and a limit: it means the writing around her decides whether she gets to be a person or a prize. She is at her best when a character is allowed to be frightened and to carry on anyway, and the roles she has kept coming back to are built on exactly that. We have reviewed only Smallville, and there the fault was never hers. We found the Luthors the reason to watch, and we stand by that; we also think Kreuk was doing patient, unshowy work in a part designed to go nowhere.
Where she goes next is probably more television and probably in the lead, and on the evidence that is the right call. If you want to see what she can do, start with the Smallville seasons before the barn became a waiting room. The series she has carried herself may make the better argument for her, and it is one we have not yet had the chance to make.

Kristin Kreuk is a Canadian actress. She was born on 30 December 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Kreuk began her career in the Canadian teen drama series Edgemont (2001–2005) as Laurel Yeung. She gained prominence playing Lana Lang in the superhero series Smallville (2001–2009). Subsequent lead roles include Catherine Chandler in Beauty and the Beast (2012–2016) and Joanna Hanley in Burden of Truth (2018–2021). She appears as Cassandra Lee in the crime drama Murder in a Small Town (2024). Film credits include EuroTrip (2004) and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009).
