Biography

Kwan Hoi-san, also credited as Herman Kwan or 關海山, was a Hong Kong actor. Born Kwan Ming-kok on 23 October 1925 in Guangzhou, Guangdong, he began his career as a Cantonese opera performer in street theatre before joining the New Voice Opera Troupe. He also sang for early Hong Kong film soundtracks and appeared in Cantonese opera film adaptations.

Kwan later worked extensively in television with TVB and took supporting roles in films. He is known for playing Captain Chi in Project A (1983) and its 1987 sequel, Mr Hoi in Hard Boiled (1992), and Papa Shang in All's Well, Ends Well (1992). He suffered a stroke in 2001 that left him mute and paralysed, and died on 11 September 2006 in Hong Kong.
