Lacey Chabert makes family affection convincing without making everyone agreeable. We value her warmth, but would start with Party of Five, where she has room to be irritated as well as kind.

In Party of Five (1994), the Salinger siblings still have ordinary problems to discuss while the loss of their parents hangs over the conversation. Chabert’s Claudia Salinger belongs in that family because she shares its irritation as readily as its affection. There is no requirement for her to be pleasant simply because everyone is suffering. We were moved by those conversations because the actors let everyday grievances matter alongside grief. The family would be much less convincing if bereavement had made everyone endlessly patient.
Working alongside Matthew Fox’s Charlie, Scott Wolf’s Bailey and Neve Campbell’s Julia, Chabert helps make affection survive disagreement. We value the ensemble’s willingness to let the siblings be awkward with one another rather than hurry towards reassurance. Claudia is a sensitive young violin prodigy, but sensitivity alone would not sustain her place among these siblings. The performance needs the friction the other actors provide, and the programme benefits from letting them answer one another. Our reservation is with the later accumulation of misfortune: these performances earn sympathy without needing so much additional trouble.
Her work beyond Claudia includes voicing Eliza Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys (1998) and playing Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls (2004). The latter gives her comic timing a useful place in another ensemble. Her subsequent Hallmark work, beginning with Elevator Girl (2010), puts that warmth at the centre of romantic stories. The fit is clear, though repeated casting in comforting stories risks narrowing the demands made of her.
Her holiday leads include A Christmas Melody (2015). Brennan Elliott is a frequent co-star, while producing roles have given her a further stake in the work. We have no objection to a happy ending; there is skill in making an audience welcome one. The caution is that warmth can become the only quality a part asks for. Start with Claudia if agreeable company is not quite enough.

Lacey Chabert is an American actress. She first gained prominence as a child actress playing Claudia Salinger in the Fox drama series Party of Five (1994–2000).
Her other notable roles include Gretchen Wieners in the film Mean Girls (2004), Penny Robinson in Lost in Space (1998), and voice work as Eliza Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys (1998–2004) and its films, as well as Meg Griffin in the first season of Family Guy (1999). She has appeared in more than 40 Hallmark Channel films.
