In Mulholland Drive (2001), Laura Harring makes Rita seem vulnerable without making her easy to read. Beside Naomi Watts's eager Betty, she allows their growing attachment to become something we care about even when the story resists explanation. We were moved by their tenderness because Harring makes Rita's vulnerability convincing even when we cannot explain her. The uncertainty never feels like a difficulty she has been asked to act out. We can stay interested in the woman without knowing how she fits into the story.
The role was her breakthrough after television parts in General Hospital (1990–1991) and Sunset Beach (1997). Supporting work followed in John Q (2002) and The Punisher (2004), and she returned to David Lynch for Inland Empire (2006). It is a career whose central performance can overshadow the work around it, though we would not turn those supporting credits into a story of wasted talent. The more useful reservation concerns her frequent casting as glamorous, mysterious women: that description catches the appearance of Rita and misses much of what Harring contributes.
Lynch asked her to imagine a dark cloud following her character, an instruction that fits the unease around Rita. Harring allows that uncertainty to coexist with the closeness between the women; Watts gives Betty's brightness the sense of someone working to stay hopeful. Neither performance requires us to understand everything before we become involved. The film is less persuasive when it wanders away from them into supporting-character detours, some of which try our patience. We wanted to get back to the women because their scenes together mattered, not because we expected them to explain what was happening elsewhere.
Harring announced her retirement from acting in 2024, so the familiar wish for another part like Rita may be beside the point. We would rather return to the work than imagine the career she might have had. Choose Mulholland Drive for the relationship, and be prepared to wait through a few detours to get back to it.
Biography
Laura Harring is an American actress. She was born Laura Elena Martínez Herring on 3 March 1964 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. She won Miss USA in 1985, the first Hispanic woman to do so, and studied theatre at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after attending Aiglon College in Switzerland.
Harring is known for her performance as Rita and Camilla Rhodes in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001). She has appeared in films including John Q (2002), The Punisher (2004) and Inland Empire (2006), and in television series such as General Hospital (1990–1991), Sunset Beach (1997), The Shield (2002) and Gossip Girl (2007). She received an ALMA Award for her work in Mulholland Drive.
