Biography
Laurence Rosenthal is an American composer, arranger and conductor for film, television, theatre and the concert hall. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he studied piano and composition at the Eastman School of Music and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War as a composer and conductor for its documentary film unit.
Rosenthal composed the score for the 1964 film Becket, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Other notable film scores include A Raisin in the Sun (1961), The Miracle Worker (1962), Clash of the Titans (1981) and The Return of a Man Called Horse (1976). He has also written extensively for television, winning seven Emmy Awards, including for the miniseries Peter the Great (1986) and episodes of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992). His stage work includes incidental music for the original Broadway production of Becket and dance arrangements for The Music Man.
