Biography
Lawrence Grossmith was an English actor. Born in 1877 in London, he was the son of the Gilbert and Sullivan performer George Grossmith and the brother of actor-manager George Grossmith Jr. He made his stage debut in 1896 and became known for his work in Edwardian musical comedy in London, later appearing on Broadway and touring in the United States and Australia.
From the mid-1920s he continued his stage career in England and America, with Broadway credits including The Cat and the Fiddle (1931), The First Mrs. Fraser (1929) and Call It a Day (1936). He also acted in films from 1914, with later roles in Murder at the Baskervilles (1937) and No Time for Comedy (1940). His final screen appearance was as Lord Dalroy in Gaslight (1944). Grossmith was married to the stage actress Coralie Maud Blythe from 1904 until her death in 1928. He died in 1944 in Woodland Hills, California.
