Liam McIntyre brings physical conviction and recognisable feeling to roles that could settle for muscle. We value that combination, though Spartacus shows the limits of what a committed actor can do when the writing keeps asking for another fight.

In Spartacus: Vengeance (2012), Liam McIntyre makes the title character look capable of a fight without losing the human being doing the fighting. His physical commitment is persuasive, and the performance gives us a reason to care about someone who could easily have been reduced to muscle. He took over from Andy Whitfield and continued in Spartacus: War of the Damned (2013), inheriting a role with an established performance to be measured against. Following another actor is difficult enough without doing it at the head of a series.
That does not make Spartacus an easy recommendation beyond its intended audience. We enjoyed the scheming and grew tired of the repeated bloodshed, because the violence too often covered for thin plotting. Steven S. DeKnight's series benefits from strong performances, but McIntyre cannot make every return to violence necessary. For devotees of lurid historical drama, there is enough here to consider; anyone impatient with the writing should not expect the acting to solve that problem.
His subsequent live-action work has continued alongside growing voice work. He plays Sotiris in The Legend of Hercules (2014), while his recurring role as Weather Wizard in The Flash ran from 2015 to 2018. His humanity is at least as useful as his fight work.
The more interesting change is the growing place of voice and performance-capture work alongside his live-action acting. Work across the Gears of War series, Star Wars titles and DC animated films keeps him close to action and fantasy while making the voice a greater part of the job. His experience with established characters makes that a sensible direction, though familiar franchises alone are no reason to recommend a performance. We would welcome a live-action part that gives him more to do between fights.
Biography
Liam McIntyre is an Australian actor. He began his career with appearances in short films and guest roles in Australian television series including Rush and Neighbours. His first major US credit was a guest appearance in the HBO miniseries The Pacific (2010).
McIntyre succeeded Andy Whitfield in the title role of the Starz series Spartacus, appearing as Spartacus in the seasons Vengeance and War of the Damned (2012–2013). He has since taken on recurring and voice roles including Mark Mardon / Weather Wizard in The Flash (2015–2018) and multiple characters in Family Guy and American Dad!. He voices Ax Battler in the animated series Golden Axe (2026).
McIntyre has also provided voices for video games and animated films, including JD Fenix in the Gears of War series, Captain Boomerang in several DC animated features, and Logan in Marvel's Wolverine (2026).
