Biography
Louis Gruenberg was a Russian-born American composer and pianist. Born near Brest-Litovsk on 3 August 1884, he moved with his family to the United States as an infant. He studied piano and composition in Berlin and Vienna, and performed as a pianist in Europe and the United States before devoting himself primarily to composition.
Gruenberg composed operas, orchestral works and chamber music. His opera The Emperor Jones (1933) was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera. In the 1940s he worked in Hollywood, writing scores for films including So Ends Our Night (1941), Commandos Strike at Dawn (1942), Arch of Triumph (1948) and All the King's Men (1949). He received Academy Award nominations for his film music and a Golden Globe nomination for All the King's Men.
He died in Los Angeles on 9 June 1964.
