Biography
Louis Hayward was a South African-born British actor. Born Louis Charles Hayward in Johannesburg on 19 March 1909, he was educated in France and England, including at Latymer Upper School in London. He became a protégé of Noël Coward and appeared in London stage productions before making his first British films in the early 1930s.
Hayward moved to Hollywood in the mid-1930s. He gained attention with his role as Denis Moore in Anthony Adverse (1936) and went on to star in films including The Man in the Iron Mask (1939), Dance, Girl, Dance (1940), And Then There Were None (1945) and House by the River (1950). During the Second World War he served in the United States Marine Corps, commanding a photographic unit at the Battle of Tarawa and receiving the Bronze Star Medal. He continued working in film and television until the mid-1970s and died in Palm Springs, California, on 21 February 1985.
