Biography
Ludwig Donath was an Austrian actor. Born in Vienna in 1900, he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and began his professional stage career at the Volkstheater in 1919. He subsequently worked in Germany before emigrating to the United States in 1940 as a refugee from Nazi Germany.
In Hollywood he appeared in dozens of films from 1942, often in supporting roles. These included Gilda (1946), The Jolson Story (1946) and Jolson Sings Again (1949), in which he played the father of Al Jolson, Sirocco (1951) and Torn Curtain (1966). He also worked frequently in television, with appearances in series such as The Twilight Zone and The Fugitive. Donath died in New York City in 1967.
