Biography

Luis van Rooten was a Mexican-born American actor, architect and author. Born in Mexico City on 29 November 1906, he earned a BA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927 and worked as an architect in Cleveland, Ohio, before moving into acting.

He began on stage at the Cleveland Playhouse and became a prolific character actor in radio, film and television, often specialising in dialects and villainous parts. His film credits include The Big Clock (1948), Champion (1949), Detective Story (1951) and The Sea Chase (1955); he voiced both the King and the Grand Duke in Walt Disney's Cinderella (1950). He also appeared in Broadway productions and numerous television series such as Perry Mason and Gunsmoke.

Van Rooten died on 17 June 1973 in Chatham, Massachusetts.
