Biography
Luiz Paulino dos Santos (1932–2017) was a Brazilian screenwriter, director, producer and occasional actor. Born in Bahia, he began working in film in the late 1950s and was active through the Cinema Novo period and beyond.
He served as co-screenwriter on Glauber Rocha’s Barravento (1962) and as producer (uncredited) on Rocha’s Black God, White Devil (1964). He appeared as an actor in Nelson Pereira dos Santos’s Mandacaru Vermelho (1961) and worked as cinematographer on Rocha’s short O Pátio (1959).
Dos Santos directed and wrote Mar Corrente (1967), Crueldade Mortal (1976) — nominated for Best Feature at the Gramado Film Festival — and Insônia (1980). His final film was the documentary Índios Zoró: Antes, Agora e Depois? (2016).
