Biography
Luther Adler was an American actor and theatre director. Born Lutha Adler on 4 May 1903 in New York City, he was one of six children of Russian-Jewish actors Sara and Jacob P. Adler. His father was a founder of the Yiddish theatre in America; his sister Stella Adler was an actress and drama teacher, and his brother Jay Adler was also an actor.
Adler made his stage debut as a child in Yiddish theatre and appeared on Broadway from 1921. He was a founding member of the Group Theatre in 1931 and directed plays on Broadway. He began working in film in 1937 and took supporting roles in productions including D.O.A. (1949), House of Strangers (1949), The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951) and Absence of Malice (1981), in which he played Santos Malderone. He also appeared regularly on television.
Adler died on 8 December 1984 in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
