Lynne Perrie was convincing as stubborn, sharp-tongued women, but we value her for more than the backchat. In Kes, her unforced acting makes a mother's neglect painful without turning her into a theatrical monster.

Lynne Perrie's Mrs Casper in Kes (1970) has little attention to spare for her son. Perrie plays that neglect with a plainness that makes it hard to dismiss as the behaviour of a specially invented villain. We were upset by her indifference because Ken Loach's film is so attentive to what interests the boy, played by David Bradley. His mother cannot find the same curiosity. Perrie makes that failure credible, and does not need to make it entertaining.
Her directness suited Loach, and there is something useful in knowing that she came to acting from singing and comedy in working men's clubs. Kes was her acting debut; its success led to television, where Queenie's Castle (1970–1972) cast her as Mrs Petty alongside Diana Dors. She first played Ivy Tilsley in Coronation Street in 1971, becoming a regular in 1979 and staying until 1994. That was the decisive change: from a mother seen within one boy's story to a combative character audiences could follow for years.
Leeds United (1974) gave her forcefulness another use, casting her as the shop steward Mollie. The repeated calls for strong-willed working-class northern women suggest both what she did well and how narrowly she could be employed. That is a reason to be careful about the shorthand. Calling all these women difficult tells us little about the acting, or about what each has to be difficult about.
Kes remains the place to look beyond that shorthand. Its rough edges occasionally distract, but Loach's patience with the boy gives Perrie's hardness a precise purpose: it makes the lack of care at home hurt. Bradley carries the film, and she helps us understand what his character is up against without demanding equal attention. Start there, and resist the temptation to watch Mrs Casper simply as an early version of Ivy.
Biography
Lynne Perrie (born Jean Dudley) was an English actress and singer. She made her acting debut as Mrs Casper in Ken Loach's film Kes (1969), having previously worked as a cabaret performer under the name 'Little Miss Dynamite'.
Perrie was born on 7 April 1931 in Rotherham and died on 24 March 2006. She appeared as Mrs Petty in the television series Queenie's Castle (1970–1972) and played Ivy Tilsley (later Brennan) in Coronation Street from 1971 to 1994. She was the sister of comedian and actor Duggie Brown.
