Biography
Malcolm Arnold was an English composer. Born in Northampton on 21 October 1921, he studied composition with Gordon Jacob and trumpet with Ernest Hall at the Royal College of Music. He played trumpet in the London Philharmonic Orchestra before becoming a full-time composer in 1948.
Arnold wrote scores for more than a hundred films. His work includes The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he won an Academy Award; Hobson's Choice (1954); 1984 (1956); Suddenly, Last Summer (1959); and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958).
He also composed concert works, nine symphonies, concertos, chamber music, ballets and operas. Arnold was appointed CBE and knighted for services to music. He died on 23 September 2006.
