Biography
Malcolm Williamson (21 November 1931 – 2 March 2003) was an Australian composer who lived in Britain from the early 1950s. He served as Master of the Queen's Music from 1975 until his death, the first non-Briton to hold the post.
He studied composition and horn at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Eugene Goossens before moving to London, where he worked as an organist and nightclub pianist. Williamson composed prolifically across genres, including symphonies, operas, concertos and choral works. His film scores include The Brides of Dracula (1960) and The Horror of Frankenstein (1970); he wrote the incidental music for the animated film Watership Down (1978).
He was appointed CBE in 1976 and an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1987.
