Biography
Mamadou Dioumé is a Senegalese actor, theatre director and pedagogue, naturalised French. Born in Dakar in 1945, he trained at the Institut National des Arts du Sénégal (INAS), where he won the Prix de tragédie, and joined the Théâtre National Daniel Sorano in 1968.
He is known for his stage work with Peter Brook, notably as Bhima in the international production of the Mahābhārata (1984–1988) and its 1989 film adaptation. His film credits include the role of Prince Biram Ngone Thioub in Ousmane Sembène’s Ceddo (1977) and Mamadou the interpreter in Bertrand Tavernier’s Coup de Torchon (1981). He has continued to appear in theatre and film into the 2020s, including recent Italian productions, and directs workshops for actors across Europe and Africa.
